If your arches feel like they collapse when you stand, and your feet, knees or back ache by the end of the day, you may have flat feet (fallen arches). The good news: the right support can make a real difference to how comfortable you feel on your feet.
What flat feet & fallen arches are
A healthy foot has an arch on the inside that acts like a spring — it absorbs shock and helps spread your weight evenly with every step. With flat feet, that arch is low or flattens out when you stand, so the foot rolls inward. This inward roll is called overpronation, and it’s usually the root of the discomfort.
Some people are born with flatter feet; for others the arch falls gradually over years. Either way, it changes the way your feet load the ground.
Signs & symptoms
Flat feet don’t always hurt — but when they do, the signs are fairly consistent:
- Aching in the arch or along the inside of the foot
- Heel pain, or pain that spreads to the knees, hips or lower back
- Feet that roll inward when you walk (overpronation)
- Uneven shoe wear — the inner edge of the sole wears down faster
- Tired, heavy feet after standing or walking for a while
- Swelling along the inside of the ankle
Why it happens
Flat feet can be down to genetics, but they’re often made worse by the demands we put on our feet — long hours standing, extra body weight, ageing tissues, pregnancy, or old ankle and foot injuries. Over time the ligaments and tendons that hold the arch up can stretch and weaken, letting the arch settle lower. Once the foot starts rolling inward, the strain feeds up the chain into the knees and back.
How custom insoles help
This is where a biomechanics-led approach matters. Custom orthopaedic insoles are built to your exact arch height, heel alignment and gait — not a generic shape — so they:
- Support the arch from underneath, so it no longer collapses under load
- Control overpronation by guiding the heel and midfoot into better alignment
- Redistribute load across the whole foot, easing pressure on the sore spots
The aim isn’t to force your feet into a shape they don’t want — it’s to give the arch the support it’s missing so the muscles and ligaments aren’t fighting on their own all day. For many people that’s the difference between aching by lunchtime and getting through the day comfortably. Pairing insoles with supportive orthopaedic footwear helps the support do its job.

An honest note
We’re a specialist fitting shop, not a medical clinic. Custom insoles are about support and relief — they help your feet load more comfortably. They’re not a medical treatment, and they won’t reshape an adult arch. If you have severe pain, numbness, swelling or a foot that’s changing shape, please see your doctor for a proper diagnosis first; we’re always happy to work alongside their advice.
Frequently asked questions
Can flat feet be corrected in adults?
In most adults the arch shape itself won’t change permanently, but the symptoms can be managed very well. Custom insoles support the arch and control overpronation so your feet load more evenly — which is what relieves the aching. Think of it as ongoing support rather than a one-time fix.
What are the best insoles for flat feet?
The best insoles are the ones built to your own arch height, heel alignment and gait. Generic “arch support” insoles often sit in the wrong place. After a biomechanical assessment we craft custom orthopaedic insoles with firmer support and motion control where your feet actually need it.
Do children with flat feet need insoles?
Most young children have flexible flat feet that develop an arch naturally, so insoles aren’t always needed. If an older child has pain, frequent tripping or very uneven shoe wear, it’s worth an assessment — and a doctor’s review for diagnosis. We can advise on supportive options without over-prescribing.
Will insoles stop my knee or back pain?
They may help. When flat feet roll inward, that rotation can travel up to the knees, hips and lower back. Supporting the arch often reduces this strain and eases related aches. We can’t promise it for every case, so for persistent knee or back pain please also see your doctor.
How long does it take to adjust to insoles for flat feet?
Most people adapt within 1–2 weeks as the feet get used to proper support. We suggest easing them in over a few days. We follow up after you start wearing them to make sure the fit feels right.
