Leg length discrepancy (short leg)

When one leg is shorter, the pelvis tilts and your hips, knees and lower back pay for it. A heel lift built to the exact height you need levels things out. Assessed online across India, or visit our Pune shop.

A heel lift or lift insole, built to the height your assessment calls for, raises the shorter leg so your pelvis sits level and your gait evens out — which is what relieves the hip, knee and lower-back ache an uncorrected short leg tends to cause.

What is leg length discrepancy?

Leg length discrepancy (LLD) simply means one leg is shorter than the other. It comes in two forms: structural, where the bones themselves differ in length, and functional, where the legs are the same length but something — pelvic tilt, muscle tightness, foot collapse — makes one behave shorter. A very small difference is so common as to be normal; research suggests mild discrepancies under a centimetre are present in a large share of the population and rarely cause problems. It's the bigger differences that change how you move.

Signs & symptoms

You don't usually feel the short leg itself — you feel what it does to the rest of you:

Why it happens

Structural differences can be something you're born with, or the result of a previous fracture, surgery or growth difference. Functional discrepancies often trace back to the feet and pelvis — a collapsed arch on one side, a tilted pelvis or tight muscles can all make a level pair of legs work unevenly. That's why an assessment matters: lifting the wrong side, or lifting too much, just shifts the strain somewhere new.

How a lift insole helps

This is a measured correction, not a guess. After we assess the difference, a heel lift or full-length lift insole is built to the exact height needed so it:

Larger corrections are usually built into the footwear rather than left loose inside it, so the lift stays stable and stays hidden. We fit lifts into shoes you send us, or a pair you choose from us, within India. Where a correction is large, we often build it up gradually over a few weeks so your body adapts comfortably rather than all at once.

Our fitting process

In Pune? Your first fitting is hands-on. Walk into our Budhwar Peth shop and we'll measure the difference, study your gait and pelvic alignment, and take detailed measurements of your feet.

Anywhere else in India? Our online fitting (₹499, fully credited to your order) assesses your gait over video and from photos, then we build your lift and fit it into footwear couriered to your door.

We follow up. Because a lift changes how you walk, we check in after you start wearing it to make sure the height feels right and your aches are easing.

An honest note

We're a specialist fitting shop, not a medical clinic. A lift insole is about levelling and relief — it won't change the length of a bone. A true structural discrepancy should be confirmed by a doctor, ideally with a measurement, before it's corrected; over-correcting can create new problems. If your pain is severe, or the difference appeared suddenly, please see your doctor first — we're glad to work alongside their advice.

Frequently asked questions

What is leg length discrepancy?

Leg length discrepancy (LLD) means one leg is functionally or structurally shorter than the other. A small difference is extremely common and usually harmless; a larger or sudden difference can tilt the pelvis and change the way you walk, which is when it starts to cause aches in the hip, knee, lower back or foot.

How do insoles correct a short leg?

A heel lift or a full-length lift insole raises the shorter side so the pelvis sits more level and your gait evens out. The lift is built to the exact height your assessment calls for — too much or too little just moves the problem elsewhere, which is why it should be measured rather than guessed.

How much of a difference needs correcting?

Not every discrepancy needs a lift. Small differences are often left alone. When a difference is large enough to tilt the pelvis or cause back, hip or knee pain, a graduated lift — sometimes built up over a few weeks so the body adjusts — can help. We assess the difference before recommending anything.

Will a heel lift fit in my normal shoes?

A small lift can sit discreetly inside many shoes. A larger correction is usually built into the footwear itself — either shoes you send us or a pair you choose from us — so the lift is stable and concealed rather than sliding around loose. We fit lifts into footwear within India.

Can leg length discrepancy cause back pain?

It can. When one leg is shorter, the pelvis tilts and the spine curves to compensate, which loads the lower back unevenly. For some people, levelling the difference with the right lift noticeably eases that long-standing back or hip ache. If your pain is severe, please also see a doctor.
